Osteopathic MedicineOsteopathy is a "hands on" approach to modern health care with a thorough foundation in the medical sciences. It is fully recognised by the State & Medical Authorities in the UK.Osteopathy is concerned with the spine, disc, joints, muscles & ligaments and their interaction with the brain, spinal cord and the internal organs. When problems with the body's' structure occur, osteopathscan offer a caring approach using safe, natural, manual treatment specifically adapted to the individuals' needs.Osteopathic treatment is suitable for all age groups. We regularly treat new born babies who have had difficult births, babies with colic or who scream non stop, children, pregnant women, sports injuries, arthritis, headaches and particularly bad backs, slipped discs, sciatica, joint & muscle problems. We use gentle soft tissue, manipulative techniques & cranio-sacral therapy to relieve pain, improve mobility & ultimately to rehabilitate our patients back to a normal pain free life.Osteopathy treats the person - not just the disorder. The ultimate
objective being the promotion of long term health.

What is the scope of osteopathic medicine?Osteopaths do not prescribe drugs, deliver babies or perform surgery. Instead their skills lie in their highly trained sense of touch which enables their hands to diagnose & treat the underlying causes of pain. If problems arise in the musculo-skeletal system (bones, joints, muscles, connective tissues) whether through injury, poor posture, stress, strain or disease then the body's nerve impulses & circulatory mechanisms can be affected & problems will result. The maintenance of proper mechanical function therefore is essential to good health but it must be stressed that osteopaths also consider other possible aspects of disease causation including emotional, nutritional, osteopaths will when necessary refer patients to other practitioners when necessary. Each & every patient is unique & must be viewed as a whole person.Medical evaluation skills are an important part of osteopathic training, therefore osteopaths are well equipped to recognise whether their skills are relevant.Osteopathy for all?Osteopathy is best known for the treatment of back pain although it is also extremely effective in a wide range of conditions. Its emphasis is upon the mechanical & physiological cause of the problem rather than upon the symptoms. For example the osteopath does not "treat back pain" but rather the mechanical causes of the patient's disturbed state of health.Functional problems, such as digestive, respiratory, circulatory, gynaecological & nervous system disorders all respond well to osteopathic treatment. In every age group osteopathic health care has much to offer; from pregnancy to childbirth, to the health problems of the elderly & at almost every stage in between.Work related injuries, not just in heavy industry but also in the office like repetitive strain injury. There are many sportsmen & women, musicians, dancers, actors who all have good reason to be thankful to to their osteopaths.Perhaps the most under emphasised aspect of osteopathic
care is its role as a preventative form of medicine. A regular check
up with an osteopath provides a sound investment in an individual's
long term health & fitness.
